Problem-solving with compassion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You want to find a solution to your problem, but you don\u2019t want to ignore your team\u2019s opinions and feelings. It doesn\u2019t mean taking responsibility for other people\u2019s problems and solving them or pitying them. Compassion involves noticing others\u2019 suffering, connecting to them cognitively and emotionally, and responding to them with support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigate the problem<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Take the time to get clear what<\/strong> and why<\/strong> do you want to fix a problem or make a change? Who<\/strong> is impacted by the change and what can be a possible solution<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understand the problem<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Find out how you and other people are feeling about this problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve said that you\u2019re {{ name the problem }}. From your tone of voice, it sounds like you\u2019re feeling really  {{ name a feeling }} \u2013 am I off?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alternatively, you can simply ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow are you feeling about this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\t<\/strong>Connect feelings and thoughts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s important that you show people you have some understanding of their situation and that you feel for them, without being rude. It\u2019s better not to say \u201cI know exactly how you feel,<\/em>\u201d even if you have been in the same situation. No two people feel exactly the same way in the same situation<\/strong>. Instead, consider paraphrasing what the person has said to you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might ask something like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt sounds like you\u2019re feeling angry because the site managers haven\u2019t made anyone available to help you address the problems they are still complaining about. Am I getting that right?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just knowing what they are feeling about the problem doesn\u2019t mean that you know what made them really feel that way. Often, an emotional response to a problem can be connected to a way deeper issue. Try being curious, to find a deeper relation to the problem if they haven\u2019t already told you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Say something like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m curious what\u2019s happened that leads you to feel this way?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t forget, the purpose of being curious is to connect better to their feelings and not to solve the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s important is, if people start to open up – not to shut them directly down. <\/em>Listen to them, explore what they really say and mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To resolve problems with compassion, you need to connect with people cognitively and emotionally without unilaterally trying to solve the problem that created it. Many people find it easier to focus on solving the problem than exploring people\u2019s struggles because this can feel uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
