In this blog post, I am going to be teaching you everything about the ADDIE model from defining what it is to understanding how it can help you create more compelling eLearning content.
What is the ADDIE model?
The ADDIE model is an acronym for the five stages of instructional design. The acronym stands for the following five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. This model can help you to think about the various stages of instructional design.
Typically, the ADDIE model is used by instructional designers to create eLearning content, but it can also be applied to other types of learning material. The ADDIE model is a great way to ensure that you are covering all five stages of instructional design.
The ADDIE model gives you the opportunity to evaluate your content and identify what parts of it need to be improved. Keep reading to learn more about how this model can help you create better eLearning content!
The 5 Stages of ADDIE model
The ADDIE model consists of five main stages: Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate. Each of these stages refers to a different process for developing a learning solution. The diagram below outlines the five stages of the ADDIE model as well as the tasks that each stage consists of.
- Analyze: In this stage, instructional designers gather information about their learners and develop a plan for their instruction. This phase is where designers will conduct research to gather information about their target audience and instructional goals.
- Design: In this stage, instructional designers will create a design for a learning activity or course. Instructional designers will also develop a plan for how they will present their content to learners and produce any required multimedia assets.
- Develop: In this stage, instructional designers will produce content for their instruction. This phase includes assembling lectures, slideshows, video clips, audio clips, quizzes, and other content.
- Implement: In this stage, instructional designers will implement their instruction into a delivery format. This step is when all of the content from the previous three stages comes together to form an eLearning course or training activity.
- Evaluate: In this final stage, instructional designers evaluate the effectiveness of their instructional components and the resulting outcomes of instruction to determine whether instruction achieves the desired outcomes.
Designing Effective Learning Experiences

Determining learning goals and objectives
The very first step in the ADDIE model is determining what your learning goals and objectives are. These goals and objectives must be measurable and attainable. For example, you can’t set a goal to “increase customer satisfaction” without defining what “customer satisfaction” is and having a way to measure when that goal has been accomplished. You would then use the ADDIE model to create a plan for achieving that goal.
The ADDIE model helps instructors figure out what to teach, how to teach it, and what the student should know when they are done. It helps instructors create a design for an effective, engaging, and high-quality course.
Planning your education
A major part of the ADDIE model is determining the needs of your learners. A good instructional designer will take the time to know who the audience is and what their needs are. This can be done by conducting research on your target audience or by talking to them directly. Once you know your audience, you can start to plan out your course.
For example, let’s say you want to create a course on how to use Excel for beginners. You’ll want to make sure the course covers the basics of what Excel is, how to navigate the interface, and also some more advanced topics like formulas and charts.
Planning out your course based on the needs of your audience will make for a more engaging learning experience. You’ll know what content to include, what skills they should learn, and where your learners are likely to hit roadblocks in their learning process.
Evaluating the effectiveness of a course
“Evaluate” is the last step in the ADDIE model. This evaluation usually consists of a number of factors, including feedback from learners and instructional staff. Evaluating a course is a crucial step in determining whether or not a course is effective.
In order to evaluate a course, you need to consider various factors. One of the most important factors in the evaluation process is learner feedback. Learners are your end-users, and their feedback can provide insight into what they liked and didn’t like about the course. In order to determine which feedback is important, you have to categorize it.
For example, if a learner states that they didn’t understand a certain aspect of a course, then that is a good indicator that you need to look over that part of the course and make improvements.
Another factor to take into account when evaluating a course is instructional staff feedback. If instructional staff have concerns about the course, then it’s likely that they have legitimate concerns from an instructional standpoint. These concerns could be related to whether or not the course was engaging enough for students or if it was too difficult for students to follow along with.
